Our Homer B. Henderson Memorial
Library is located in Room 206, on the second floor of the Christian
Education Building. Our self-service library is open on Sundays from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
and on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.
Our goal is to be of service and to provide an inspirational
ministry to the entire congregation. We also strive to strengthen
and aid the Christian Education program of the church. The library
is a well-balanced collection of more than 2,100 books and
educational materials, which include the following: devotional
literature, references for Bible study and religious education,
resources for program planning, and leisure time reading material.
The books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal classification
system. Materials are listed in the card catalog by author, title,
and subject. Additionally, the library has videotapes, magazines,
audio cassettes, records, kits, games and pictures. Come and check
it out!
History of The Homer B. Henderson
Library
by Donna Olsen, Library Committee Chair
In 1959, Bush Hill
congregation held a "Spiritual Life Crusade" conducted by Dr. Homer B.
Henderson of Grove City, PA. His generous gift of $100 was donated to
establish a church library. When the Session adopted a resolution to
establish a library on July 1, l959, a decision was made to name it "The
Homer B. Henderson Memorial Libary" in honor of him. A committee,
consisting of Dr. R. Neil Hazlett,
Chairman, Elizabeth French, Ruth Hindman, Einar Nelson, and Lucy Scott,
was set up; and
with the donated funds, the first books were purchased on January 11,
1960. Of those 30 books, some continue to be on our shelves today!
Since the current two
library rooms were Rev. Catlin’s (first pastor’s) office and reception
room, the library was first located in Room 205, the present resource
room. Mrs. Ray Harris prepared and cataloged the books and necessary
file cards to begin operation on January 31, 1960. Librarians were Miss
Carol Rutledge and Miss Louise Butler.
Regulations instituted
at the time were as follows: “Books may be checked out for two weeks,
with the option of one renewal if there is no waiting list. A fine of 25
cents per week will be levied on overdue books. Books may be donated to
the library as a memorial or an outright gift through the library
committee.” (There currently is no fine.)
Our collection has
grown to 2,300-plus materials in the ensuing 45 years. Librarians and
committee members have changed over time, in addition to the location;
but our mission has continued to be the same: to provide an
inspirational ministry to all church members and a well-balanced
collection of books and instructional materials; and to strengthen the
Christian Education of the church.
