Our History
Diane Catlin, wife
of first pastor, William C. Catlin
The Bush Hill United
Presbyterian (U.P.) Church is a child of the Board of American
Missions of the United Presbyterian Church of North America. After a
considerable period of planning and prayer, permission was sought
and received form the Washington Area Comity Committee to build a
Presbyterian Church in this general area. Dr. James K. Leitch,
acting for the Mission Board, purchased a three-acre tract of land
on the historic Bush Hill Plantation from the owner, Mr. Bruce C.
Gunnell. In the fall of 1957, the contract for the first unit “fleur
de lis” chapel and educational building was awarded to Sharpe and
Hamaker, Inc. Work was started in the middle of November, and the

Chronology
Clare Kampe, Bush Hill member since 1964
Looking back over
these past five decades, we remember the hundreds of those in this
community of faith who have shared in our work and worship. Though
proud of our achieve-ments, we are mindful of our shortcomings as we
continue to serve God in a challenging and changing world. As we
celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Bush Hill Presbyterian
Church, we offer praise and thanksgiving to God. We have been truly
blessed!

BHPC 50th Anniversary
Dave Stumbaugh, Clerk of Session for over 23 years
What a wonderful event this was—with a great program of interest to
all and an opportunity to meet and greet friends from the past who
have meant so much to the life of this church over the years. Many
thanks are due to Wanda Violette, Pat Bauer, Clare Kampe, and a host
of others on the Celebration Committee who worked so hard to make
this event truly outstanding and memorable. Bush Hill Church
received a certificate from the Presbyterian Historical Society and
the Office of the General Assembly in honor of our church's 50-year
anniversary, and this has been framed by Fred Kuntz and displayed in
the narthex. An accompanying letter from the Stated Clerk of the
General Assembly reads, in part, “As you celebrate this important
milestone in your history on October 26, 2008, I pray that your
ministry will be renewed and refreshed. May the grace of our Lord
continue to bless your work and worship.”
